Org. Setting and Reporting

The United Nations Environment Programme (UN Environment) is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment.

The overall objective of the UN Environment’s Economy Division is to encourage decision makers in government, local authorities and industry to develop and adopt policies, strategies and practices and technologies that promote sustainable patterns of consumption and production, make efficient use of natural resources, ensure safe management of chemicals and contribute to making trade and environment policies mutually supportive. It promotes the development, use and transfer of policies, technologies, economic instruments, managerial practices and other tools that assist in environmentally sound decision making and the building of corresponding activities.

 

UN Environment’s Air Quality and Mobility Unit implements programmes that contribute towards clean fuels, clean vehicles and improved air quality. The Unit requires an intern to assist in the implementation of cleaner mobility activities of the Unit. Specifically, the intern will provide support to the Global Fuel Economy Initiative (GFEI) and Electric Mobility (Emob) projects. The internship is for six months. The internship is unpaid and full-time. Interns work five days (35-40 hours) per week under the direct supervision of a staff member in the department or office to which they are assigned.

               

Responsibilities


Under the overall supervision of the Head of Unit and the daily supervision of the Programme Officer for Electric Mobilty, the intern will:

 

1)Assist in further developing and analysis the global Global Fuel Economy Initiative (GFEI) database containing all available fuel economy baselines, to support development policy measures to improve fuel efficiency of vehicles, including electrification in developing and transitional countries;

2) Update and complete a report focusing on fuel efficiency in low and middle income countries based on the analysis of the GFEI baselines;

3) Update and complete the electric mobility policy database;

4) Review of the Electric Mobility Programme calculators;

5) Review and improve the system of keeping track of fuel economy policy impacts, research and analyze global transport energy efficiency strategies, benefits and challenges;

6) Review country reports incorporating results of the GFEI Fuel Economy Policies Impact Tool (FEPIT), to analyze potential outcomes of different policy options based on the characteristics of vehicle fleets in a range of different scenarios;

7) Research and consolidate fiscal measures on the countries that GFEI will assist in 2019/2020;

8) Support the new global program on Used Vehicles to carry out more in-depth analysis to improve the understanding on the supply chain, quality and scale of used vehicles;

9) Updating and reviewing the used vehicle database

10) Support in communicating programme activities for example through organization of webinars, or case studies;

11) Other duties as assigned by the Programme Officer and the Head of the Air Quality and Mobility Unit.

Education

Applicants must at the time of application meet one of the following requirements:

 

(a) be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher in Environment Science, Sustainable Transport, Development or related field);

(b) be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent in Environment Science, Sustainable Transport, Development or related field); or

(c) have graduated with a university degree (as defined above) and, if selected, must commence the internship within a one-year period of graduation;

 

2) Be computer literate in standard software applications;

 

3) Have a demonstrated and keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter; and

 

4) Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which includes a willingness to understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.

 

5)The candidate must have strong analytical skills and sound knowledge of environment and mobility related issues.


Work Experience

Applicants are not required to have professional work experience to participate in the programme. However, experience in research and writing documents related to environmental issues is desirable.


Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this internship, fluency in oral and written English is required.

 

Knowledge of another UN language (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian and Spanish) is an asset.
