Org. Setting and Reporting

The position is located in the Improvised Explosive Device (IED) Threat Mitigation Advisory Team (TMAT) of the United Nations Mine Action Service (UNMAS), Office of Rule of Law and Security Institutions (OROLSI) within the Department of Peacekeeping Operations (DPKO). The UNMAS IED Threat Mitigation Internship is for six months.

 

All qualified candidates are encouraged to apply; however, preference will be given to equally qualified female applicants and those available at the earliest possible start date. The internship is UNPAID and full-time. Interns work five days per week (35 hours) under the supervision of a staff member in the department or office to which they are assigned.


Responsibilities

Duties may include, but are not limited to:

 

-Research and compile IED threat (mitigation) information from UNMAS programs for use in the IED threat mitigation database.

-Support in the development of IED threat mitigation based Specialized Training Materials.

-Assist in the management of the TMAT Program of Work (PoW).

-Assist in monitoring media coverage of mine action and international relations issues.

-Assist in the management of the TMAT stakeholder analysis.

-Assist in the management of the TMAT Stakeholders Engagement Plan (SEP).

-Assist in liaison with TMAT focal points in UNMAS field programmes specifically related to generating multimedia public information materials.

-Assist in the preparation of outreach material such as talking points, correspondence and presentations.

-Perform other duties as necessary.

-Keeps clients informed of progress or setbacks in projects

-Meets timeline for delivery of products or services to client


Education

To qualify for an internship with the United Nations Internship Programme, the following conditions must be met:

 

(a) be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher);

(b) be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor's level or equivalent); or

(c) have graduated with a university degree (as defined above) and, if selected, must commence the internship within a one year period of graduation;

 

Be computer literate in standard software applications;

 

Have a demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter; and

 

Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.


Work Experience

Applicants are not required to have professional work experience for participation in the programme. Interest and experience in communications preferred.


Languages

English and French are the working languages of the UN Secretariat. For the post advertised, fluency in English is required. Working knowledge of French is desirable.


Assessment

Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise which may be followed by competency-based interview.
