Org. Setting and Reporting


This internship is located in the Geospatial Information Section, Technology Operations Service, Operations Support Division within the Office of Information and Communications Technology (OICT). The internship is for three months with an opportunity for extension for an additional three months, depending on the needs of the Office.

The Geospatial Information Section provides geospatial information and cartographic support to the UN Secretariat.

The internship is UNPAID and full-time. Interns work five days per week (35 hours) under the supervision of a staff member in the department or office to which they are assigned.

Applicants may be requested to undertake the internship remotely in view of constraints regarding visa issuance, international travel and access to UN premises. Applicants must be willing and prepared to undertake the internship remotely for a part or the entirety of the internship.

Responsibilities


Under the direct supervision of the Chief of the Geospatial Information Section or his/her designated officer, the incumbent is responsible for the following duties:

• Contributes in providing geospatial information, data, analysis and cartographic services to the Secretariat, including its peace operations as well as the Security Council;

• Contributes to the preparation of reports based on organizational needs and requirements for reporting and analysis;

• Contributes to the preparation of geospatial data, being responsible for the acquisition and initial cleaning of data from primary and secondary data systems and documents data sets used;

• Contributes to the creation and maintenance of geospatial databases, contributes to geospatial data collection projects products, tools, analysis and processes to extend the capabilities of client offices;

• Contributes to the identification and analysis of patterns in geospatial data sets using various methods;

• Prepares geospatial data sets upon request; responds to queries/requests and maintains/updates web pages;

• Performs other related duties as required.

Establishes and maintains productive partnerships with clients by gaining their trust and respect. Identifies clients’ needs and matches them to appropriate solutions. Monitors ongoing developments inside and outside the clients’ environment to keep informed and anticipate problems. Keeps clients informed of progress or setbacks in projects. Meets timeline for delivery of products or services to client.

Education


To qualify for an internship with the United Nations Internship Programme, applicants must meet one of the following requirements:

(a)Be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); or,

(b)Be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor's level or equivalent).

Applicants must have academic qualifications in the following:

Geography, geospatial information, cartography, Earth observation sciences, or other related field.

Work Experience


No working experience is required to apply for the United Nations Internship Programme. Your training, education, advance course work or skills should benefit the United Nations during your internship.

The following skills are desirable: Experience dealing with basic geospatial information dealing particularly in the areas of: (a) geospatial data management, (b) geospatial analysis, (c) geospatial data visualization and cartography production; hands-on experience in spatial database management or software application development; strong computer skills including the use of geospatial software such as ArcGIS and image processing software such as ERDAS/Imagine; hands-on experience using spatial data server software such as ArcGIS for Server; familiarity with graphic arts software such as Adobe Illustrator and/or MAPublisher; and good drafting skills and ability to prepare concise reports and presentations.

Languages


English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this position advertised, fluency in English is required. Knowledge of another official UN language is desirable.

Assessment
